I’m like a superhero with no powers or motivation, and she’s my Lois Lane.

PulpFiction - News Reader

I visit a lot of websites every day, or at least my news reader does, and I sift through about 200 articles daily. Up until now I’ve been using Net Newswire, and it’s good, simple does a good job of grabbing the RSS feed and checking what’s new. But there where a few things that I’ve found where missing in it’s features. Things such as scheduled downloads per site and better use of screen space.

Today I came across PulpFiction. It does all that, plus lets you save individual entries in an archive, blog about a particular article directly from the app, apply labels and customize the display of the articles in the reading pane with style-sheets. Plus AppleScript support, Filters, searching, and it supports both Atom, RDF and RSS feeds.

It is shareware, and $25US, but there is always the free Lite version as well.

Check it out.

9/11 Commission Report

The 9/11 Commission Report is available online, in it’s entirety here. It’s 585 pages in it’s entirety, I’m going to give it a read, there is also a 35 page summary version; however I suspect a lot is kinda missing. Take a read, form your own opinion.

Very cool cooking

ekwe_320Look at that stove top. That is probably the coolest looking stove I’ve ever seen. This needs to go in my new house. When I buy it. And win the lottery. It’s made by Küppersbusch. The control unit there, with the buttons is only $1,750 US, and then each element is between $550 US - $650 US. Still very very cool looking.

Google’s Recruitment for Developers

Google put up billboards in the U.S. with the following equation on it.

{first 10-digit prime found in consecutive digits of e}.com

So you start grabbing groups of 10 digits from e and seeing if they divide by 2, 3 and all the numbers less than the square root of itself, and you eventually find 7427466391, which leads you to www.7427466391.com.

Here you find the following:
Congratulations. You’ve made it to level 2. Go to www.Linux.org and enter Bobsyouruncle as the login and the answer to this equation as the password.

f(1) = 7182818284

f(2) = 8182845904

f(3) = 8747135266

f(4) = 7427466391

f(5) = __________

If you take a close look at the first and second entity, they have repeating characters, go back to e, where we find that these are consecutive groups of 10 digits of e. They have something else in common too, each group of 10 add to 49. Find the 5th set that adds to 49, and you’ve got your password.

Mr. Clean AutoDry Carwash

Okay, I love my car as my friends will attest to. Staysea thinks I love my car too much, but she’s just jealous. On the weekend I picked up a Mr. Clean AutoDry Carwash kit, the advertisement says a spotless dry, and they’re not kidding. It was great. I have a black car, and this purchase gave me a better wash then going to the drive in hand wash stations, which raised their prices again, so I’m not overly thrilled with them. Obviously it didn’t make much of a difference on the drying part with Staysea’s white car, but if you own a dark colored car, I suggest you try it out. The cheapest I’ve seen it was at Walmart. But if you have some Canadian Tire money kicking around, this is a good time to find it.

More bird news

Today we welcomed an 8th bird into our home. She’s a beautiful white and blue budgie whose family was going to be traveling alot in the future and wanted her to come to a good home. She doesn’t have a name yet, we want to get to know her better. So far things with her and my other budgies have been tense, she’s a bit pushy and aggressive and a little bit on the wild side. I’m sure she’ll quickly learn the pecking order.
In other bird news…. Monet our other new parakeet moved into her new cage today. My dad built her a cage that allows for her handicap. Monet is going to loose her left foot due to a circulatory problem despite our best attempts to treat the foot. The new cage has a combination of perches and platforms with ladders going from top to bottom. Birds are very adaptable animals and we have every expectation that she will recover and fully adjust. Things are still a little uncertain, if the foot gets infected we could still loose him. At the moment the good part of the foot is healing very well and the dead toes are clean. We continue to hope for the best.

My Phoenix Playlist

I love music. I particularly like music that evokes an emotion, preferably one with adrenaline and energy, so I’m posting my playlist I put together from years of going to the Phoenix, a nightclub in Toronto that plays Hard Rock Alternative.

If you have any additions I’d love to hear about them in the comments section. Try to stick with the general theme.

Albert Duncan Johnston

We said goodbye today to Albert Duncan Johnston, Staysea’s grandfather. He passed away at the age of 72 on Saturday. The service was today. It was obvious that he will very much be missed. I’m sorry that I didn’t have more opportunities to meet him. Carl and Ronda are in town for the next few days, before heading back to Vancouver. God bless.

Stop using IE!

The US Department of Homeland security actually made an announcement telling users of Microsoft Internet Explorer to stop using IE and consider an alternate, due to the number of security issues.

Personally, I use a Mac, so Safari is my browser of choice, although IE is an option as well. On my windows machine I’ve found Firefox (Download Here) is very fast, and has popup blockers, plus it’s free. Give it a try instead.

Wired News: Mozilla Feeds on Rival's Woes:
“But last Friday, in response to the latest security exploit involving Microsoft products, the usually staid U.S. government’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, published a warning strongly suggesting that users of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer should switch to another Web browser, due to “significant vulnerabilities” in technologies included in IE.”
