Budgie Bomb!

Know what a Budgie Bomb is? No? Well, if you had 4 budgies, and they where all sitting quietly minding their own business, then POW! Budgies flying everywhere, for absolutely no reason. That is a Budgie Bomb.

Strange but True: Kangaroo Jack was funny!

Staysea and I watched Kangaroo Jack (Jerry O’Connel) this afternoon. It was actually funny. We also watched Bringing Down the House (Steve Martin & Queen Latifah) last night and it was very funny!
Two fun movies worth checking out.

Source Code for NT4 and Windows 2000 Leaked

From this Eweek article, the source for NT 4 and Windows 2000 has been leaked on the internet. Why do you care? Well, it is very easy, once you know how the code is written to write a virus that takes advantage of any mistakes, weaknesses or cracks. Any one who wants to develop a virus would have a lot easier time with the source.
But wait a minute, the source code for Linux like operating systems is open source where are their viruses? Ah, greater resources to patch the same vulnerabilities.

5,000 Units

I passed the 5,000 work units complete mark some time this week for the SETI@Home Project. SETI@Home is a distributed research project to listen for signals from space. They record an area of the sky, break up the data, and then when your computer is on and doing nothing else, it downloads some of this data, analyses it and sends it back to the SETI group. They have similar projects in place for things like cancer research, where you fold protein molecules called Folding@Home.

Hackers

I’ve been reading through the Hackers listing on Discovery.com. It’s facinating. I’ve only read through the biographies so far, but none the less, it is interesting to see where the pioneers of computing are now and how they got there.
For instance Kevin Poulsen took over the phone system to ensure he was the 102 caller in a radio contest to win a Porsche 944 S2.
OR
John Draper aka Capt’n Crunch, he is famous for using a whistle that was being given away in boxes of Capt’n Crunch to trick payphones into thinking that he’d put in a quarter and making free phone calls.

$66 Billion for a Mouse???

So, Comcast want’s to buy Disney for $66 billion. Amazing. In an earlier discussion this morning with a friend of mine, we marveled at the fact that it’s $66 billion for something that doesn’t really benefit humanity in any substantial way.
I agree that I enjoyed watching Disney movies. It’s just incredible that that much money is all about entertaining us. That amount of money would easily clear up the liberal party’s Groupaction scandal. Maybe get Toronto some new roads.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

I finished Prince of Persia for the XBox on the weekend. Not a very hard game. The final battle was particularly disappointing. It had little challenge at all. With the difficult battles throughout the game, you are being swarmed, which makes it hard. Sadly the final battle wasn’t some marathon fight, but a one on one. Don’t get me wrong, the graphics where stunning, the game play was fluid, and ALOT of FUN! I’ll probably play it through again, see if I can do it any faster.

PS: I also unlocked the first 2 Prince of Persia games. An amusing little bonus feature, funnily I found them harder than this game.

Build Your Own Bar (aka: Garbage Ware)

One of Staysea’s courses requires her to use an online application, to run a hospitality service simulation. You are supposed to create a bar or hotel. The simulation is called Build Your Own Bar or BYOB.
Everything was fine, then one day, she logged in and her hotel her hotel had changed from what it was the day before. That’s odd. She sent me an invitation to go to her site:
byob1
Upon trying to visit the site, I’m brought to a different hotel. When we brought this to the BYOB staff’s attention. They corrected the error, lied that they did nothing, and blamed Staysea.
byob2
My career is based around testing web applications, I’m very good at it and understand where things can go wrong with, browser caching, cookie duplication and database errors. This spectacularly poor level of customer service is disturbing at best, but understandable, since I can plainly see by their client list, that if their clients found out the truth about how many holes and inherent flaws their system has, they may all cancel. If you are looking at the BYOB system for your school, I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere.
