Okay Enough about the House
More importantly is that Zack got booted off of Paradise Hotel. Rock on! Now we need to get rid of his evil girlfriend. And what is Toni doing on the dark side? She needs to come back to the nice or she is going to loose Scott to that new girl. Crazy!
Comments are off for this postThe Floors are coming along…
I’m busy hand sanding the floors I varnished last night. Just a pad of steel wool and a lot of quality, getting to know my floor up close and personal time.
Tired now… pictures of the stained and varnished floor tomorrow. Maybe I’ll finish sanding them too… I was only able to do half of it.
Days 6, 7 and 8
Saturday morning started off with some cleaning and more painting.

My office turned out quite nice, in it’s Pebble Beach color.

The living room got painted a supposed burgundy, unfortunately for us, we should have used a tinted primer because it came out more of a hot pink. To compensate the second gallon has 8x more black in it and will darken it up quite nicely.

After a dinner break Staysea and I painted the kitchen walls. I really like the color.

On day 7 we rented the floor sander, and I built the window seat for my office and prepped all the part for the living room window seat. Humphrey helped out too, he would like to remind you that safety is important in any home project.

This morning our dads finished off the work on the floor and started staining. You can see in some of the other pictures how dark the wood was before sanding. There was paint that had to come off and dark patches where stains had set in. It’s just incredible how different it all looks now.

Day 4 and 5 – The queasy feeling is leaving me.
Day 2 and 3 flashback, this is the pile of subflooring that Carl and I pulled up. My hands hurt just looking at it.

Day 4, Kelly spent the day with Staysea painting the kitchen. We have the doors to prime, and these are the colors.

Day 5, my parents showed up and my Mom helped with the painting and my Dad teamed up with Carl (Staysea’s Dad) to fix the sunken floor.

Here is a great picture of the change in the cupboard doors.

How many nails where holding down the sub-floor? Count the patches that my Dad put in the holes.

The ceilings where painted too. Really cool paint that goes on pink, so you can see where all the yellow is being covered, and my lord where they ever yellow. Now, though… Beautiful white.
Coming tomorrow, color to the offices, sanded floors and more!

set it up for you.
Day 3 – What if floor joists just stopped suddenly?
So the reason why there is a sag in the floor near the kitchen is because, the floor joists end and the new ones have dropped. These pictures are looking down through the floor starting on the left, closest to the front door ending on the right next to the kitchen door.

Staysea and her Mom finished priming her office. Looks good.

Carl and I finished ripping up the remaining subfloor. The front room looks great!

My hands are killing me from pulling up with the crowbar. Tomorrow will be mostly priming. Staysea finished cleaning and patching the kitchen. My office needs priming as do the livingroom and the front room. Phew. Can’t wait.
Kitchen Work
Staysea is currently cleaning, sanding and patching the walls in the kitchen for the new colors that she has chosen. It’s a lot of work. The ceilings need to be painted as well, and there is molding that we want to preserve in some of the rooms so it will need to be masked first.
Carl (Staysea’s Dad) is coming over again tonight to finish ripping up the floor. My parents are coming up on the weekend to work on finishing the floors and painting all the rooms. It will all be worth the effort.
On Day Two we found out why the floors where covered
Staysea’s parents came over today to help with ‘The Project’ and we pulled up most of the subfloor that was placed over the hardwood in the living room and dining room. We found a couple of odd surprises that we where not expecting but are pretty confident we can fix.

First on the hit parade, was the fact that there used to be a fireplace where the big window is now. I knew about that so, no problem, we are building a window seat.

Next in the junction to the dining room, there is a gap where you can see light in the basement and new boards start.

Near the door, the floor dips a good inch, the plywood was shored up on boards and there is a big hole in the floor that used to be the cold air return for the furnace. It may very well become one again, after we cut out that section of floor and raise it level with the rest of the room.

But for the most part not a bad night’s work. Still have some more to do, but it shouldn’t take more than another night to get all the flooring out and take a good look at what we can do next.

And now to bed, because my hands hurt from using a crowbar for 3 hours and I’m tired.
Pictures, Plans and Demolition
Staysea and I spent the better part of this afternoon and evening working on the apartment upstairs. Here are some of the results of those efforts.
This is the living room.

After ripping up a layer of blue carpet, two layers of linoleum, this is what we found in Staysea’s office. That’s right, all hardwood floors, absolutely gorgeous.

When we checked out my new office, there was a layer of carpet, with the bottom completely destroyed, all it left was powder. That was lay down on top of more carpet with a rubber backing, that was lay down over 2 more layers of linoleum and that was on top of newspapers dating from 1948.

Then we decided to get to work on the rotted and damaged tiles in the living room and dining room. The dining room will be refereed to as ‘The Nook’. The television, surround sound and X-box will live there. Almost all of the tiles came up pretty easy. It looks like after we pull up some plywood we may be able to restore the hardwood there too.

In the end, this is the giant pile that we pulled out.
